What Are Braces?
Braces are a fixed orthodontic appliance that gradually shifts your teeth into the correct position by applying gentle, controlled pressure over time. They work by bonding metal brackets to the surface of each tooth and connecting them with an archwire, which the dentist adjusts progressively throughout treatment to guide tooth movement.
Unlike removable options, braces work around the clock — they stay fixed in place for the full duration of treatment, making them one of the most reliable methods for correcting misalignment, crowding, spacing, and bite problems across a wide range of cases.
QP Dental offers two types of fixed braces — traditional metal braces and self-ligating braces. Our dentists, lead by Dr. Christine will conduct a full assessment and recommend the option most suited to your teeth and treatment goals.
What Can Braces Fix?
Braces are suitable for a wide range of orthodontic conditions
🦷
Crowded Teeth
When teeth overlap or lack sufficient space to sit in proper alignment along the jaw
↔️
Gaps Between Teeth
Spaces caused by missing teeth, jaw size differences, or natural development patterns
😬
Overbite
When the upper front teeth overlap too far vertically over the lower front teeth
↕️
Underbite
When the lower teeth protrude in front of the upper teeth when biting down
😊
Crossbite
When upper and lower teeth don’t meet correctly on one or both sides of the mouth
✅
Crooked or rotated teeth
Teeth that are tilted, turned, or sitting at an angle relative to their neighbours

Fewer Visits, Smoother treatment
Self Ligating Braces
- Consultation & orthodontic assessment
- Built-in clip — no elastic ties needed
- Less friction, potentially faster movement
- Fewer in-clinic adjustment appointments
- Easier to clean
- Estimated duration: 18 – 24 months

Traditional, Reliable, Time-tested
Metal Braces
- Consultation & orthodontic assessment
- Standard metal brackets & archwires
- Suitable for mild to complex cases
- Colour elastics available (popular with teens)
- Regular in-clinic adjustment visits
- Estimated duration: 18 – 24 months
Are braces as effective as clear aligners?
For moderate to complex cases, fixed braces remain the gold standard. For mild to moderate misalignment, clear aligners can be comparably effective. Our dentists, lead by Dr Christine will always give an honest clinical recommendation — not based on what costs more.

How Braces Treatment Works
A straightforward process from consultation to your new smile
1
Orthodontic Assessment
Our dentist examines your teeth alignment, bite, and jaw structure. X-rays may be taken to plan the most effective treatment. She will explain realistic timelines and expected outcomes honestly.
2
Treatment Planning
A personalised plan is prepared — including the recommended braces type, estimated treatment duration, and the number of follow-up visits. You will be guided on what to expect at each stage.
3
Braces Placement
Brackets are bonded to each tooth and connected with an archwire. The appointment typically takes 1 – 2 hours. Most patients feel mild pressure for the first few days — this is normal and settles quickly.
4
Regular Adjustments
Follow-up visits every 4 – 8 weeks to monitor progress and adjust the archwire. Self-ligating braces generally require fewer visits than traditional metal braces.
5
Removal & Retainer
Once alignment goals are achieved, braces are removed and a retainer is fitted. Retainers are essential to hold your teeth in their new position long-term. Our dentist will advise on the most suitable retainer type for your case.
