Q. What is the difference between metal braces and self-ligating braces?
Traditional metal braces use elastic ties to hold the archwire onto each bracket. Self-ligating braces use a built-in sliding clip instead, which reduces friction on the wire. This can allow for more comfortable tooth movement and typically means fewer adjustment visits. Both types can treat most orthodontic conditions. Our Dentist will advise which is more suitable after assessing your case.
Q. How long does braces treatment take?
Most patients complete treatment within 18 to 24 months. Mild crowding may resolve sooner; more complex bite or spacing issues may take longer. Our dentist will provide a realistic estimate at your consultation after a full examination of your teeth and jaw.
Q. Will braces hurt?
Some pressure and mild discomfort is normal after braces are first fitted and after each adjustment appointment. This typically settles within 2 to 4 days. Over-the-counter pain relief is usually sufficient. Self-ligating braces tend to cause slightly less soreness due to reduced wire friction.
Q. Am I suitable for braces?
Braces are suitable for most adults, teenagers, and children whose permanent teeth have come through. Suitability depends on the health of your teeth, gums, and jawbone. A full clinical assessment by our dentist is required before any treatment recommendation is made.
Q. What foods should I avoid with braces?
Hard foods (nuts, crusty bread, raw carrots), sticky foods (caramel, gummy sweets), and chewy foods (tough meat, bagels) should be avoided — they can dislodge brackets or bend wires. Soft foods are recommended especially in the days following each adjustment visit.
Q. How do I keep my teeth clean with braces?
Brushing after every meal is important. Use an interdental brush or floss threader to clean between the brackets and wires. The clinic team will demonstrate the correct technique at your fitting appointment. Self-ligating braces have a slightly simpler cleaning routine as there are no elastic ties to trap food debris.
Q. Do I need a retainer after braces?
Yes. A retainer is essential once braces are removed to hold your teeth in their new position long-term. Teeth have a natural tendency to drift back toward their original position. Our Dentist will advise on the most suitable type — fixed or removable — based on your case.
Q. Where is the clinic located? Is there parking?
QP Dental is located at Pelangi Avenue (Pusat Komersial Pelangi), Taman Pelangi, Johor Bahru. There is ample street and basement parking available at the centre. WhatsApp us to confirm your appointment slot before visiting.
