What are Dentures?

Dentures are removable prosthetic appliances used to replace missing teeth and the surrounding gum tissue. They are a well-established and clinically reliable option for patients who have lost multiple teeth β€” whether due to decay, gum disease, trauma, or extraction β€” and need to restore their ability to chew, speak clearly, and maintain facial structure.

There are two main types: a full denture, which replaces all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw, and a partial denture, which fills gaps where only some teeth are missing while the remaining natural teeth are retained. Both are custom-made to fit the shape of your mouth and are designed to look and function as naturally as possible.

Modern dentures are significantly more comfortable, stable, and natural-looking than earlier generations of dental prosthetics. With a proper fit and correct care, most patients adapt well and can eat and speak with confidence. At QP Dental, all denture assessments, impressions, fittings, and adjustments are carried out by our registered dentist to ensure the most accurate and comfortable result for each patient.

Signs You May Benefit From Dentures

Dentures address a range of practical and clinical concerns. A consultation is needed to confirm whether dentures are the right option for your situation.

πŸ•³οΈ
Multiple Missing Teeth
Loss of several teeth β€” whether from decay, gum disease, or extraction β€” affects chewing, speech, and the support of surrounding facial structures.
πŸ˜”
Difficulty Chewing
Missing teeth reduce the surface area available for chewing, making it harder to eat certain foods and placing excess stress on remaining teeth.
πŸ’¬
Changes in Speech
Missing front teeth in particular can affect pronunciation and speech clarity. Dentures restore the tooth support needed for clear articulation.
😞
Sunken Facial Appearance
Teeth and bone support the shape of the lower face. When multiple teeth are lost, the face can appear sunken or aged. Dentures help restore natural facial contours.
πŸ”„
Existing Denture No Longer Fits
The gum ridge changes shape over time, causing existing dentures to become loose, uncomfortable, or difficult to retain. A refitting or new denture may be needed.
βœ…
Severely Broken-Down Teeth
Teeth that are too damaged to save with fillings or crowns may need to be extracted. Dentures are often planned in advance to restore function as soon as possible after extractions.

*A clinical assessment is required to determine the most appropriate treatment for your specific situation.

How the Procedure Works

Select a denture type to see the step-by-step process.

1

Initial Assessment

The dentist examines the mouth, assesses any remaining teeth, gum health, and bone ridge shape. If teeth still need to be extracted before the denture can be made, this is planned at this stage. The most appropriate type of full denture β€” conventional or immediate β€” is discussed.

2

Preliminary Impressions

Impressions of the upper and lower arches are taken using impression trays and material to capture the overall shape of the mouth. These are used to fabricate custom trays for the more detailed impression taken at the next visit.

3

Final Impressions & Bite Registration

Using the custom trays, a precise final impression of the gum ridge is taken. The relationship between the upper and lower jaws β€” your bite β€” is also recorded at this stage. Tooth shade and shape are selected to achieve a natural result.

4

Wax Try-In

A trial denture set in wax is placed in the mouth for assessment. The teeth arrangement, appearance, fit, and bite are all checked and adjusted before the final denture is processed. This stage allows changes to be made before the denture is complete.

5

Fitting & Delivery

The completed denture is placed and assessed for fit, comfort, and bite. Minor adjustments are made chairside. Instructions are given on how to insert and remove the denture, how to clean it, and what to expect during the adjustment period.

6

Follow-Up & Adjustments

A review appointment is scheduled within one to two weeks. Sore spots, pressure areas, and bite discrepancies are identified and adjusted. Further follow-up visits may be needed as the gum ridge settles and the mouth adapts to the new denture.

*The number of visits required depends on individual clinical conditions and whether extractions are needed before the denture is made. Fees subject to clinical assessment.

1

Assessment & Treatment Planning

The dentist examines the remaining natural teeth, gums, and bite to determine the design of the partial denture. The position, number, and condition of the teeth that will support and anchor the denture are assessed. X-rays may be taken to evaluate the root and bone support of the abutment teeth.

2

Impressions

Detailed impressions of the upper and lower arches are taken, capturing the shape of both the remaining teeth and the gum ridges where the artificial teeth will rest. These are sent to the dental laboratory for the fabrication of the partial denture framework.

3

Framework Try-In (for Metal Partial)

For chrome cobalt partial dentures, the metal framework is tried in the mouth before the artificial teeth are attached. The fit of the clasps on the natural teeth, the extension of the framework, and the comfort are all assessed and confirmed at this stage.

4

Tooth Arrangement & Bite Registration

The artificial teeth are set in wax on the framework and tried in to check the appearance, tooth position, and how the upper and lower teeth come together. Adjustments to shade, size, or position can be made before the denture is finalised.

5

Fitting & Delivery

The completed partial denture is placed in the mouth. The fit of the clasps on the natural teeth, stability of the denture base, and bite are all checked. Minor adjustments are made as needed. Instructions for insertion, removal, and cleaning are provided.

6

Follow-Up & Adjustments

A review appointment is arranged to address any sore spots, pressure areas, or discomfort that have developed during the initial wearing period. Adjustments to the clasps or base may be made. Further follow-ups are scheduled as needed until the patient is comfortable.

*The number of visits depends on the complexity of the partial denture design and individual clinical conditions. Fees subject to clinical assessment.

Caring for Your Dentures

Proper care extends the life of your denture and maintains good oral health.

πŸͺ₯
Clean Daily
Remove and brush your denture every day with a soft brush and non-abrasive denture cleanser β€” not regular toothpaste, which can scratch the surface.
πŸ’§
Soak Overnight
Dentures should be kept moist when not being worn. Soak them overnight in plain water or a denture solution to prevent warping and maintain shape.
🦷
Clean Your Gums
Brush your gums, tongue, and palate every morning before inserting the denture. This removes plaque and stimulates circulation in the gum tissue.
πŸ“…
Regular Check-Ups
Even with dentures, regular dental check-ups are important. The dentist monitors gum and bone health, checks the fit, and identifies any adjustments needed over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most patients require a few weeks to adapt to wearing dentures comfortably. During this period, speaking and eating may feel unfamiliar as the muscles of the tongue and cheeks learn to work with the new appliance. Mild soreness in the first weeks is normal and typically resolves with follow-up adjustments. The adjustment period varies between individuals.
Modern denture teeth and base materials are designed to closely replicate the appearance of natural teeth and gum tissue. The shade, shape, and size of the teeth are selected to suit your facial features and, where possible, resemble your natural teeth. Most people find that well-fitted dentures are not noticeable to others.
Most patients can eat a wide range of foods with dentures. It is advisable to start with softer foods and cut food into smaller pieces during the adjustment period. Very hard, sticky, or tough foods β€” such as hard nuts, toffee, or crusty bread β€” may be more challenging and should be approached with care. The dentist will provide guidance on diet during the initial adaptation phase.
Dentures typically last between five and ten years before they need replacement. Over time, the gum ridge changes shape as bone resorbs, causing the denture to become looser and less stable. Regular check-ups allow the dentist to monitor the fit and advise when relining or replacement is appropriate. Proper daily care helps extend the life of the denture.
In most cases, it is advisable to remove dentures at night to allow the gum tissue to rest. Continuous wear without removal can contribute to gum soreness and accelerated bone resorption. Dentures should be stored in water or a denture solution when not worn. The dentist will advise on the recommended routine for your specific denture type.
A loose or ill-fitting denture is a common issue as the gum ridge changes shape over time. It should not be ignored β€” a poor fit causes sore spots, difficulty eating, and can accelerate bone loss. Do not attempt to adjust the denture yourself or use denture adhesive as a long-term solution. Contact the clinic for an assessment; relining or a new denture may be required.
An immediate denture is fabricated in advance and placed in the mouth on the same day as tooth extraction, so the patient is never without teeth. It also helps protect the extraction sites during healing. However, as the gum and bone remodel in the weeks and months following extraction, the immediate denture will require relining or replacement with a definitive denture once healing is complete. The dentist will discuss this option if it is relevant to your treatment plan.
