ORAL CARE

Good oral care is not only about brushing harder or using more products. For patients in Johor Bahru (JB), the key is using the right technique, a proper routine, and suitable tools consistently. A simple daily approach, kept up over time, tends to do more for your teeth and gums than occasional aggressive cleaning.
Toothbrush
Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush. Hard bristles and aggressive brushing can contribute to gum recession and cervical abrasion over time.
Tips:
- Brush twice daily
- Spend about 2 minutes brushing
- Use gentle circular motions instead of scrubbing sideways
- Replace the toothbrush every 3 months or when bristles become frayed
Electric toothbrushes can also be helpful, especially for people who brush too aggressively or have difficulty cleaning thoroughly.
Toothpaste
Use fluoride toothpaste to help protect against cavities and strengthen enamel. Different toothpaste types may help specific conditions:
- Sensitive toothpaste for tooth sensitivity
- Anti-tartar toothpaste for people prone to tartar buildup
- Whitening toothpaste for stain removal (avoid overuse if abrasive)
More toothpaste does not mean better cleaning. A pea-sized amount is usually enough for adults.
Flossing
Brushing alone cannot clean effectively between teeth. Dental floss helps remove plaque and food debris from these tight spaces.
When to floss:
- Once daily, preferably before bedtime
Floss gently to avoid injuring the gums. The goal is to clean the sides of the teeth, not force the floss harshly into the gums.
Interdental Brushes
For people with larger gaps, braces, gum recession, or periodontal issues, interdental brushes may clean more effectively than floss in certain areas.
They come in different sizes and should fit comfortably without excessive force.
Mouthwash
Mouthwash can be a helpful addition, but it should not replace brushing or flossing. Different mouthwashes serve different purposes:
- Fluoride mouthwash for cavity prevention
- Antibacterial mouthwash for gum inflammation
- Alcohol-free options for dry mouth or sensitive tissues
Some strong antibacterial mouthwashes should only be used short term if advised by a dentist.
Tongue Cleaning
Bacteria can collect on the tongue surface and contribute to bad breath. A tongue scraper or toothbrush can gently clean the tongue once daily.
Diet and Habits
Oral health is also affected by daily habits. Try to:
- Reduce frequent sugary snacks and drinks
- Drink more water
- Avoid smoking or tobacco products
- Limit acidic drinks if possible
Frequent snacking keeps the mouth acidic for longer periods, increasing cavity risk.
Regular Dental Check-Ups
Even with good home care, some plaque can harden into tartar and require professional cleaning. Regular dental visits help:
- Detect cavities early
- Monitor gum health
- Remove tartar buildup
- Identify problems before they become more serious
A simple and consistent routine is usually more effective than overly aggressive cleaning. Gentle but thorough care helps maintain healthier teeth and gums long term.
